Dog owner’s delight after vets successfully treat tetanus

An Isle of Wight couple have thanked expert Hampshire vets who treated their beloved family pet following a severe attack of tetanus.

Three-year-old cockapoo Chester was referred to Linnaeus-owned Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists, in Winchester, after he began spinning in circles, losing his balance and limping.

Edward Ives, an RCVS-recognised specialist in neurology at Anderson Moores, said a host of symptoms pointed to an acute case of tetanus.

Tetanus is a potentially life-threatening condition which is caused by a toxin that develops in infected wounds and seeps into the nervous system where it interferes with nerve cell communication, preventing muscle relaxation and leading to uncontrolled muscle spasms.

Edward said: “Chester was an unusual case as he initially presented with specific signs just affecting his left front leg, without involvement of his face or an identifiable wound, which is a scenario more commonly seen in cats.

“However, he then progressively deteriorated and started to show difficulty walking on all four limbs, along with worsening hyperextension and rigidity in his left front leg.

“A diagnosis of focal tetanus was suspected and treatment was started immediately, including administration of tetanus anti-toxin, antibiotics, muscle relaxation, anti-anxiety medications and a magnesium constant infusion, along with supportive care by our amazing nursing team.”

Edward and neurology clinician Giulia Corsini led an intensive seven days of treatment and careful monitoring that finally turned the tide in Chester’s favour, with the much-loved family pet now happily reunited with owners Ciara and Mark Rouse.

Mark said: “Anderson Moores provided exceptional care for our beloved Chester. From start to finish, the level of professionalism, expertise and compassion displayed was nothing short of outstanding.

“Chester was a particularly complex case, yet the team at Anderson Moores made us feel supported and reassured every step of the way.

“They kept us well-informed throughout his treatment, offering regular updates and ensuring I understood everything about Chester’s condition and care.

“A special mention goes to Ed Ives, who is an incredible asset to Anderson Moores. The dedication and kindness he showed to Chester was deeply appreciated and the invaluable updates he provided gave us immense comfort during such a challenging time.”

Anderson Moores offers expert care in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dentistry, diagnostic imaging, feline hyperthyroid clinic, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.
