Endocrine Disease

Endocrine diseases such as diabetes and thyroid diseases form a large proportion of the caseload at AMVS.

These patients frequently present as complex medical cases. In some patients a diagnosis has already been made but therapy is not proving effective. Our role is to understand that particular animal’s disease in more detail and tailor the management to the specific case such as the unstable diabetic. Other patients present with undiagnosed endocrinopathies as part of their primary disease process or as a complication of another problem.

We have a great deal of expertise and the necessary diagnostic equipment to help us achieve an answer in such cases. We have also developed good contacts facilitating the measurement of some of the more unusual hormones or hormonal by-products and are very used to organising the necessary handling and shipping of the more labile compounds such as PTH, renin, PTHrP, gastrin and ACTH.

Diagnostic imaging is a key service in helping us understand our endocrine cases allowing visualisation of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands and pancreas by ultrasound and the pituitary with CT and MRI. Continuous glucose monitoring is available via a subcutaneous sensor enabling better understanding and appropriate treatment of those frustrating, poorly responsive or unstable diabetics.

We have dedicated Endocrine Clinics with fixed price procedures where the Internal Medicine team are there to support you in investigating endocrine cases that present as complex cases and need extra investigation whether that is for diabetes, Cushing's disease or hypercalcaemia.
